The Gambia Bakers Union has, over the weekend, held its first elective congress for positions of executives who would steer the affairs of the union in the next three years.
Amadou Tijan Jallow was elected unopposed in the position of president. He vowed to fight against the challenges faced by the members of his union and work to resolve the issues.
The union aims to regularise and standardize the baking of bread in the country in line with the Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) guidelines.
Four executive positions were vied for – the presidency, vice presidency, secretary general, and treasury positions were elected into office.
“I want to assure you my sincere commitment to curbing or mitigating the challenges that we are facing as a union. We will surely standardise and regularise the baking using advised guidelines for safety consumption as it’s one of our mandates to provide clean and safe food for the Gambians,” Jallow assured delegates at Qcity, on Saturday.
Omar Demba, owner of Kings Bakery, was elected unopposed as the vice president of the union.
Lamin Dibba retains the position of secretary-general as no one shows intention to contest against him in that position.
Ousman Demba was also elected as treasurer of the National Bakers Union unopposed.
Certificates were presented to all registered members of the union to serve as recognition of their membership.
