Mr. Yankuba Darboe, Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) has assured that his office is committed to ensuring a tobacco-free Gambia.
He gave this assurance while delivering a speech during the recent celebration of the World No-Tobacco Day at Westfield.
As part of the global commemorations, the GRA boss was medaled and awarded a certificate by the WHO for spearheading the implementation of a stringent tobacco excise regime in The Gambia.
“As we celebrate this achievement, let us remember that our work is far from over. We must remain firm in our commitment to a tobacco-free Gambia. We must continue to push for stronger policies, enhance public awareness, and support those who wish to quit tobacco use. Together, we can create a healthcare environment for all Gambians. This achievement is a vital step toward improving our public health and safeguarding our future generations from the devastating effects of tobacco,” CG Darboe underlined.
Dilating on the award conferred on him by the global health body, the Gambia’s revenue mobilization chief said: “I am also deeply grateful to my dedicated team at the Gambia Revenue Authority. This award is a reflection of your hard work, passion, and commitment to our mission. Together, we have demonstrated that effective policy measures can lead to tangible change and I am proud to stand alongside you in this fight.”
He described the accolade as a powerful catalyst, inspiringhim to step up efforts in the fight against tobacco.
“We are committed to building upon our successes and implementing even more measures to curb tobacco use in our society. I hope that this recognition serves as an inspiration for the many who are involved in this fight, “CG Darboe stated while acknowledging the role of GRA’s partners in the fightagainst tobacco consumption, especially the civil society, whose advocacy and dedication have been instrumental in raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco.
“Your tireless efforts have empowered our communities to make healthcare choices and to advocate for a tobacco-free Gambia and GRA will continue to levy high taxes on cigarettes to ensure a tobacco-free Gambia. I call on all and sundry to join the Ministry of Health to combat tobacco to ensure a healthy nation,” the GRA boss stated.
