NHRC holds stakeholder forum to promote the rights of the aged

By Binta Jaiteh

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), yesterday, held a stakeholder forum to promote the rights of the aged in The Gambia.

The theme of this forum held at Senegambia Beach Hotel was ‘Ageing with Dignity in The Gambia: Promote the Human Rights of Older Persons.

However, the 1997 Constitution and other national legislation like the Women’s Act 2010 uphold the human rights of older persons and older women and protect them against all forms of discrimination and other forms of violence.

Speaking at the forum, the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare described the gathering as a significant opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by the elderly population and to explore strategies to enhance their well-being and rights.

She noted that in The Gambia, elders are the pillars of communities. They are the custodians of traditions and culture, the transmitters of values, and the wisdom keepers of the nation.

However, as they age, many older persons face numerous challenges, including poverty, health issues, social isolation, and discrimination, saying these challenges threaten their dignity and well-being, and it is the collective responsibility of people to address them.

The Gender Minister stated that the government of The Gambia through the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare is unwavering in its commitment to improving the lives of older persons and ensuring that their rights are respected.

“Our dedication to this course is grounded in several key legal and policy frameworks. This stakeholder forum on the promotion of the rights of the older person offers us a great opportunity to discuss issues,” she opined.

Commissioner Jainaba Jhom representing the chairperson of National Human Rights Commission pointed out that as the main institution charged with the promotion and protection of human rights in the country, it has been working with its partners to address violations suffered by older people, particularly women.

In this regard, she said the Commission created a Thematic Committee on Vulnerable Groups, which includes the rights of older persons. This Committee works towards identifying solutions to the challenges faced by older persons and advises the government on ways to improve their conditions.

She, therefore, urged everyone to always report any human rights violations witnessed, especially those against older persons.
