A migrant boat carrying 64 Gambians, which departed Sfax in Tunisia through the Mediterranean Sea, has sunk resulting in the death of 60 Gambians.
According to one Ebrima of Migrants’ Situation, a boat from Sfax in Tunisia left on Friday night the 13th of September 2024, with 64 Gambian migrants onboard, including 4 women and 2 babies sank which led to the loss of lives of 60 people while 4 survived.
“The cause of the capsized boat was believed to be bad weather conditions which have recently become a trend. A similar predicament has occurred where a couple of dozens of young people lost their lives when a boat capsized off the Senegalese Coast carrying many nationalists from the region of West Africa. Many more boats carrying some migrants are still missing,” he added.
As the EU seeks solutions to end this phenomenon by introducing more inclusive policies like skilled labour and migration agreements, between Europe and Africa, many young people are still adamant and desperate to take this perilous journey, due to unbearable socioeconomic conditions like high unemployment and inflation in their countries of origin.
