The leader of the Gambia People’s Liberation Party (GPLP) cum Chairman of Coalition Tabax Reewmi, Ousman Jallow, was last Sunday elected as President of the Africa Youth Union.
Representing the West African bloc, Jallow captured an impressive 62% of the votes to triumph over his closest opponent from the East Africa Youth Union, who garnered only 28% while both the South Africa Youth Union and Central Africa Youth Union candidates secured just 5% each to underscore the faith and trust placed on Mr. Jallow by the youth of the continent
It would be recalled that during his campaign, Jallow resonated deeply with the hearts of the youth, articulating powerful messages that echoed the aspirations and challenges facing the continent. He passionately advocated that “Africans will never be foreigners in their own land,” a clarion call that underscores the importance of fostering unity and identity across the diverse nations of Africa. His vision for a politically and economically cohesive Africa is one that speaks to the urgent need for collaboration and solidarity among African nations.
When contacted by The Voice, regarding his unique victory as the first Gambian president of the continent’s Youth Union, Jallow said:”I call on African youths to engage in politics rather than resorting to illegal migration. The allure of drugs reflects a profound understanding of the crises plaguing young people today. I recognize that the future of Africa rests in the hands of its youth, and I am dedicated to creating pathways for empowerment and opportunity.”
He pledged to diligently work with NGOs, government agencies, and other stakeholders to uplift and support the youth of Africa.
“I am determined to lead with integrity and a profound sense of purpose to steer the Africa Youths Union towards a transformative journey, paving the way for a prosperous and united Africa. There shall be no youth humiliation, no tolerance for child abuse,” he stated, emphasizing the need to protect the rights and dignity of every young African.
The GPLP leader described his victory as a beacon of inspiration for countless young individuals across the continent, reminding them that together, young Africans can forge a new era defined by empowerment, unity, and boundless possibilities
