The issue of unemployment in the country continues to be a major debate not only among the old school leavers but also the young graduates that daily see sitting at every junction or corner in their community swaying away the better part of their youthful time without no jobs to do.
Speaking to some of the idle young people during a random interview with them at their different ‘vous’ Nfansu Conteh from Kafuta now staying in Tallinding said youths are experiencing lots of challenges which include unemployment, drug abuse, inadequate higher education, mental health issues, and “those that were able to get a job are not well remunerated, the standard of payment in this country is, too, poor!”
He reiterated that the salary paid in this country is like an “insulting salary,” thus, are not enough married people to take care of their families “talk less of saving from it.”
Meanwhile, he said unemployment rates are among the things that increased the number of robberies, stealing, and drug abuse in the country.
Assan Secka, a resident of Bundung, says the Gambia is lacking because of its weak government, and “let people stop blaming youths for not willing to work. There are no jobs for them to do.”
Notwithstanding, Assan advised youths to start taking the initiative to do something for themselves rather than endless waiting.
Aminata Hydara too lamented the rate of unemployment among youths, and the challenges females are facing in the country saying it is high.
“There are not enough jobs for youths this is the reason most of the ladies are playing around as a fast way to have money. I believe not every university graduates are working. I personally have been searching for jobs but most of the managers will like to play with girls (carnal knowledge of you) before giving you a job. I choose to do business online but it is becoming so hard because everyone wants to do online business so who will be the buyer?” she asked.
