The government of The Gambia has renewed its commitment to ensuring visa-free entry in the country for all citizens of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Honorable Babucarr Boye, Minister for Public Service, who represented the Interior Minister, made these remarks at the ongoing 8th Annual ECOWAS Forum of Heads of Immigration Services at the Sir Dawda KairabaJawara International Conference.
He added that the Ministry of Interior prioritizedinvestments in technology in order to ensure that The Gambia Immigration Department operates with thehighest standards of efficiency.
‘’One significant step in this direction is the government’s commitment to ensuring visa free entry for nationals of all ECOWAS member states in line with the spirit of regional cooperation and the protocols that unite us. The right of ECOWAS citizens to enter and reside in The Gambia as well as establish businesses. The Gambia remains dedicated to creating conducive environment for all ECOWAS citizens,’’ Hon. BabucarrBoye reassured.
He stated that ECOWAS Identity Card is more than a documentation as it symbolizes a step towards the realization of two regional citizenship, where ECOWAS citizens can move freely, seek opportunities, and contribute to the development of the region.
The minister described the Heads of ECOWAS Immigration Forum as a platform for harmonizing policies, addressing mobility issues, and most importantly promoting the full implementation of the bloc’s free movement protocols.
‘’It is a testament to our shared commitment to the ideals of free movement, mutual support and sustainable development. This marks a significant step in our collective journey towards deeper integration, mobility, and economic cooperation across West Africa,’’ Hon. Boye explained.
Acknowledging the challenges faced, he reaffirmed thedetermination of the government to strengthen border management through comprehensive training, skills development, and infrastructural support.
‘’A well-trained GID is critical to ensuring both the security of our borders and the facilitation of free movement within our region,’’ he noted.
Minister Buoy stated that the ministries of the interior and foreign affairs of The Gambia will continue to seek bilateral and multilateral as well as regional and international partners for study tours, policy alignment, and special training for GID to meet the demands of today’s interconnected world.
‘’In this era of globalization and migration, no nation can tackle the complexities of border management on its own,’’ he maintained.
