The Cement Importers Association of The Gambia (CITA) has requested a police permit to stage a protest on 10 October 2024, this medium has gathered.
According to our source, the association made the request last week as there appeared to be no end in sight to the stalemate between it and the government over the new cement levy.
The association wants to protest over the 500% increase in levy on a bag of imported cement.
The government had increased the levy on a bag of imported cement from D30 to D180, a development the local importers said had destroyed their livelihoods.
Government said it introduced the new levy to protect local cement “manufacturers” but some of the companies it said it was protecting have been importing bagged cement of-late.
