The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, presided over by Magistrate M. Faal, on Wednesday convicted and sentenced one Mustapha Darboe on shop-breaking and stealing charges.
Mustapha was found guilty of stealing cash of D60, 000, $100, 20 pounds equivalent to D1, 880, one Lenovo laptop valued at D10, 000, CFA, one chrome laptop valued at D8, 000 and one Samsung galaxy A03 core mobile phone valued at D5, 000. The items were valued at D91, 880.
Adducing the fact of the matter before the court, prosecuting officer Gomez narrated that the theft occurred on 27 September 2024, at Pipeline around 4:00 am. He stated that a team of officers from the Anti-Crime Unit were conducting patrols when it came across the accused and two of his friends.
“When they heard the noise of the vehicle of Anti-Crime, they ran away but the accused was apprehended whilst his friends escaped,” officer Gomez further narrated.
According to the prosecution, when a search was conducted on Mustapha upon his apprehension, he was found with D37, 300, $100, 30 pounds and a green bag, containing two laptops with a charger and a Samsung Galaxy marked A03.
He was fined D5000 for shop-breaking in default to serve six months at Mile II while he was fined D7,500 for stealing in default to serve nine months at Mile II.
The convict was also ordered to pay a compensation of D30,000 to the shop owner Abubacarr Bah in default to serve two years at Mile II.
