The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the Gambia Police Force (GPF) on Friday afternoon forwarded to the GPF’s prosecution unit the case files of two journalists of The Voice newspaper.
There were all indications that the two would be arraigned before on Tuesday after the police charged them two weeks ago with the alleged offense of false publication and broadcasting.
They categorically denied the charges.
The Gambian leader Adama Barrow threatened to sue The Voice newspaper a little more than a fortnight ago if the medium did not apologize to him for publishing a story about his reported exit strategy. The President also demanded a retraction and millions of Dalasi in damages and court costs if he should take the matter to court. The story quoted reports that quoted NPP executives as saying that Mr. Barrow had settled down to businessman Muhammed Jah as his successor in the 2026 general election.
The Voice’s Managing Director Musa Sheriff and reporter Momodou Justice Darboe were detained after their refusal to apologize to the President or retract the story as demanded by Mr. Barrow’s lawyers.
They were informed on Friday that the State “is now ready” to prosecute them at the Bundung Magistrates’ Court and should report to the police HQ in Banjul on Tuesday morning.
