Magistrate I.O Njie of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Courton Tuesday granted one Alhagie Darboe of Bakau D100,000 bail following his denial of drugs possession charges.
Alhagie, who is in his youth and resident in Bakau, was charged with an offence of been found in possession of 300g of marijuana, a charge he vehemently denied.
He told the court that the marijuana that was alleged to have been found on him was in fact owned by a doctor.
“They did not find it on me. The person, who owned it, is a doctor and works at the hospital. He is currently free and treating patients,” stated Alhagie.
However, prosecuting officer Ceesay denied Alhagie’s claim, saying the case involving a doctor was different from the current case. He then applied to the court not to grant the accused bail as “he is a habitual” offender.
But in her ruling, Magistrate I.O Njie said she cannot remand the accused on a bailable offence. She then granted him D100,000 bail and must provide two sureties as part of his bail requirements.
The case was at that juncture adjourned to 23 October 2024.
