Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, conveyed the decision to her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, during a phone call. She also confirmed that a notification letter had been sent to the so-called representation of the separatists in Quito.
In accordance with diplomatic law and international law, this notification constitutes an immediate cancellation of any diplomatic status for the separatists and the closure of the so-called representation in Quito.

The decision to suspend the recognition of the so-called “rasd” by Ecuador, a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2023-2024, comes just days before the adoption of the Security Council resolution on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
Two days ago, the Republic of Estonia also has affirmed that the Moroccan autonomy initiative is “a serious, credible and good basis” for a definitive solution to this regional dispute.
«Estonia considers the autonomy plan presented in April 2007 by Morocco to the UN Secretary-General as a serious, credible, and good basis» for a definitive solution to the Sahara issue, according to the joint declaration issued following a meeting in Rabat between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and his Estonian counterpart, Margus Tsahkna.
These decisions are part of the ongoing dynamic driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI over the past years to reaffirm the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and the Autonomy Plan as the sole basis for resolving this regional dispute.
