Unlawful Sewage Discharge Lands Man in Trouble

Leo Jatta was Wednesday arraigned before Magistrate M. Fall of the Kanifing Magistrate Court for unlawful discharge and dumping Contrary to Section (4) of the Environmental Protection (prevention of Dumping Act 1988 Volume 72:02 Laws of The Gambia 2009.

According to particulars of his offense, Leo Jatta is said to have on or about the 10th day of September 2024 at Sting Corner in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of the Gambia, willfully and unlawfully dumped/discharged waste from his truck into the water bodies of Tambi Wetland without any lawful authority, thereby committed an offense.

The accused, however, denied the charge by telling the court that ‘’ I don’t dump it I was about to dump it when they suddenly arrived.’’

The prosecution officer, Sergeant 4195 Baldeh made an application for an adjournment to allow him to secure his witnesses and didn’t object to the bail for the accused and his application was granted.

The accused Leo was granted bail in the sum of D5,000 with one Gambian surety, who shall deposit their valid national identity card to swear to an affidavit of means.

The matter was then adjourned to 5th November for the hearing.
