By: Isatou Sarr

One Amadou Muktarr Sey, a plastic bags importer has urged the Brikama magistrate’s court presided over before Magistrate K.B Sambou to allow the presence of his lawyer before taking his plea.

On Thursday, the prosecution charged Sey with the importation of banned plastic bags contrary to section 9 (1) (a) of the ban on plastic bags order, 2015.

The Inspector General of Police was represented by Inspector Fadera while the accused person was not represented.

The indictment alleges that Amadou Muktarr Sey on the 3rd day of August 2023, at Busumbala in the West Coast Region in the Republic of The Gambia, wilfully and unlawfully imported banned plastic bags without any authority, thereby committed an offence.

The accused person raised concern that he wanted to wait for his lawyer before taking his plea.

The Magistrate said, “Since the accused has intimidated the court he has a lawyer, in the interest of justice, I will adjourn this matter to the 12th day of December 2024, for the accused to take his plea in the presence of his lawyer.”

The accused is admitted to bail in a sum of D20,000.00 with one Gambian surety who shall deposit a valid Gambian ID card with the registrar of courts.
