Former MPs Raise Concern Over Gambia’s Current Situation

Two former National Assembly Members have raised concerns over the country’s current situation.

In an exclusive interview with The Voice, the ex-lawmaker for Kiang Central, Honourable Bakary Camara said among the reasons for the high cost of living in the country over past years is due to the continuous depreciation of the Dalasi against major currencies, particularly the Dollar.

“Gambians have been complaining of continuous price hikes of basic commodities still the government failed to look for alternatives to address the situation. As a former lawmaker I am worried about the poor people starving at their homes,” he explained.

“The government must invest in agriculture that will boost our economy”, he stressed.

Hon. Camara stated that agriculture is the only way to push the country forward and more efforts are needed to improve the lives of the Gambia people.

According to him ranging from the health sector, education, and to the security sector, “all these areas are in a mess.”

“I think the government should focus on settling the country. They keep on taking loan upon loan that is even affecting the country’s development”, he claimed.

The former MP for Sabach Sanjal, Honourable Ousman Touray described the current situation of the country as unfortunate.

His description of the situation is in two folds saying duty bearers have no mercy for the poor masses and most of them are not taking up their responsibilities as expected, too.

“Lack of respect for the rule of law has caused rampant corruption in Barrow’s administration”, he pointed out, too.

The former lawmaker noted that it is very sad that government officials behave as they feel and forget about the plight of the masses.

He rated the health sector as the worst sector thus there is no medicine in the hospitals, and people continue to face the consequences.

“How can poor Gambians go to private hospitals for treatment”, he asked rhetorically while emphasizing the failure of the government in providing adequate security in the country.

However, he also touched on the issues of the erractic power supply among other affecting issues in the country.
