President Adama Barrow has urged the opposition to be patient and wait for their time, citing that his National People’s Party will govern the country for several generations.
The President made this declaration in a political rally in the Upper River Region, which was organized by NPP’s National Women’s Mobiliser, Maimuna Baldeh, over the weekend.
President Barrow stated that when he leaves the stage, he wants to be succeeded by another NPP militant. He took time to remind the opposition parties of his willingness to work for an enduring NPP rule.
‘’This is why I always tell the opposition to sit and wait for their time because their time is yet to arrive. I am the father of the National People’s Party. When I leave office, I will give the seat to my children [NPP]. When my children are done, they will hand the baton to one of my grandchildren. When they are done, my great-grandchildren will take over the presidency. That is the reason I built NPP political bureaus all over the country,’’ he told the rally.
The Gambian leader maintained that those who are always making noise haven’t done anything meaningful for the country and that their discourse is always about whether he will contest or not. Barrow asserted that the opposition will suffer a worse defeat in the next general election.
‘’What have those, who are always talking, done for the country? They are just ranting about my presidency, saying that I wouldn’t contest in the next election and that President Barrow wouldn’t win in 2026 but I think it’s now clear that the defeat they will suffer in the 2026 presidential election will be worse than what happened to them in the 2021 presidential election,’’ the President stated while expressing his appreciation to party sympathizers for attending the meeting.
He urged NPP members to stay united and not allow any individual to separate them, especially “pretenders”.
“NPP can govern this country for a very long time if you are united. You can do that because you are working while others are just talking. I am not here to play or talk. I came to work. I am not a politician but a service provider. I will continue to provide that service to the people until Allah decides. I will unveil my new projects during the Meet The People’s Tour,’’ the President said.
President Barrow urged NPP militants to register with the party and get their membership card for recognition so that they would be considered if assistance is to be given by the party to its militants as in the case of the recent scholarships awarded to NPP university students.
