Blackpool Narrowly Edges BabunFatty to Advance to Semis

By: Penda Joof

Blackpool defeated Babung Fatty FC from the penalty spot after a thrilling goalless draw in the ongoing Wave-sponsored knockout quarter final of Serekunda West Sports Development Association’s summer Nawettan on Sunday, 17th November, 2024.

The derby day has produced a magnificent performance by both sides as neighbouring Blackpool and Babung Fatty showcased resilience during the entire regulations, but none of the two teams was able to break the deadlock. Blackpool had more goal-scoring opportunities, but could not take their chances. BabungFatty FC also had their fair share of the chances, but they did notcapitalize on any as well.

Babun Fatty is deemed by many as one of the best teams in the whole Serekunda West Nawettan this year.

This result follows another unexpected defeat in the hands of Tigers FC. The match ended 4-3 from the post-match shootouts in favour of underrated Blackpool FC.

Samuel Loe Manga, the head coach of Blackpool expressed his satisfaction of the performance displayed by his team. He stated that he knew that the game was not going to be easy, hence they prepared very well before the showdown.

‘’Our previous games were very bad and disappointing, but from there, we worked on the problems and embodied a winning spirit in our past games. The only thing affecting us right now is converting our chances into goals. We produced a very strong performance and crafted many goal-scoring chances but in the end, we squandered all,’’ he told The Voice in a post-match interface.

Abdoulie Badjie, the head coach of Babung Fatty FC, also spoke to The Voice after the encounter. He said the game was a ‘’hard luck’’ one on his team.

‘’We came to pitch knowing that we may lose this encounter because the boys were not focused and their minds were not stable due to the defeat we suffered recently against Tigers FC in the league at the same stage. We are waiting for next season and get more prepared to work hard again.’’
