Regulatory officials and Mobile Network Operators of both The Gambia and Ghana on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, signed a Memorandum of Understandings for implementation of the ECOWAS Free Roaming Services in a ceremony at the Metzy Hotels in Kololi.
Dr. Njogu Bah, Director General Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), expressed gratitude to Gambian and Ghanaian Mobile Operators and the National Communications Authority of Ghana (NCA) for making the day successful.
DG Bah stated that the partnership entered into by the signing of a symbolic MOU represents a significant step forward in the shared commitments by both countries to enhance mobile communication roaming services, bringing greater connectivity and opportunities for its citizens.
He noted that despite geographical distance, both countries have always shared a long-standing and fruitful relationship that is rooted in mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared vision for progress.
“Over the years, Ghana’s leadership in areas such as governance, infrastructure, and technology has been an inspiration to The Gambia. Through this MOU, we are reaffirming our commitment to strengthening these ties, particularly in the area of telecommunications, where both nations have shown great potential for growth and collaboration,” Dr. Bah explained.
The agreement, Dr. Bah insists is not just about formalizing a partnership, it is according to him, about celebrating Ghana’s instrumental role in shaping the telecommunications landscape across Africa. The National Communications Authority of Ghana (NCA) has played a pivotal role in promoting innovation and regulatory excellence, and PURA is privileged to partner with such a forward-thinking institution.
“Through this MOU, we aim to enhance cooperation between the NCA, PURA, and the Mobile Network Operators of both our countries. Ghana’s leadership and best practices will be invaluable as we work together toward this agreement, ensuring that our citizens benefit from seamless communication services both at home and when traveling abroad. For The Gambia, this MOU represents an opportunity to further strengthen our digital infrastructure and improve access to information,” he reaffirmed.
For his part, Prof. Ezer Osei Yeboah Boateng, Deputy Director General of NCA- Ghana expressed his delegation’s satisfaction with the robust deliberations that led to the eventual production and signing of the MOU.
He thanked all and formally invited PURA and Mobile Network Operators to Ghana next April for the Go–Live Launch of ECOWAS Free Roaming Services between The Gambian and Ghana.
