The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) with support from UNDP and the European Union through GREAT Project on Friday held a Regional Public Information Town Hall Session on the 2024 draft constitution bill.
This Regional Public Information Town Hall Session was held in Kerewan, North Bank Region under the theme “A New Constitution for a New Republic: Get Informed, Get Involved,” launched in September.
The engagement was part of an ongoing campaign covering five regions (URR, CRR, NBR, LRR, and WCR), reaching approximately 250 participants.
Whether it’s ensuring equal opportunities, protecting human rights, or promoting social justice, a strong constitution is essential for a thriving society. Participants were taken through the bill’s most significant provisions, especially those that impact governance, human rights, and social justice.
Ansumana Ceesay, Program Manager of NCCE said the 3rd outreach program targets different stakeholders and actors to enlighten the public on the content of the draft constitution bill.
He noted that the objective is to facilitate comprehensive engagement, participation, and understanding of the Content of the 2024 Draft Constitution Bill and its progression through the legislative process, from gazeting to the National Assembly and finally to the Referendum.
He went on to say that the involvement and participation of their commitment to ensuring that all voices are heard in this crucial constitutional building process, to ensure that the wishes and aspirations of the citizenry are fully reflected in the Draft Constitution.
Ceesay reiterated that the outcomes of the engagement will help to disclose how people wish to be governed, protect fundamental rights, and build a more just and prosperous society. “A constitution is a fundamental document that shapes our lives. It defines our rights, responsibilities, and the structure of our government,” he added.
So, “This town hall session offers the opportunity to share your thoughts, ask questions, and contribute to shaping our nation’s future. The session will focus on the thematic areas of understanding the content of the 2024 Draft Constitution Bill, progression through the Legislative Process, and how citizens can participate in the process.”
Chief Fabala Fadia Kinteh of Lower Badibou thanked NCCE for the enlightenment while tasking everyone to be vigilant and disseminate the information.
Jaila Gaye, Youths Representative at Regional Youth Committee NBR said the public engagement on the draft constitution bill is crucial, as it demonstrates the government and stakeholders’ commitment to enhancing citizens’ involvement and participation.
