The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) in partnership with the Gambia Press Union (GPU) on Monday trained editors and journalists on conflict sensitive coverage of the implementation the Government’s White Paper on the TRRC report.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the training, the President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU),Muhammed S. Bah, stated: “Today, we embark on a journey of reflection, learning and transformation-essential steps in shaping the role of the media in fostering a just and peaceful society”. He added that the true value of the training lies not just in the knowledge gained, but in how it’s applied in the participants’ daily work.

The European Union Representative, Ms. Enya Brawn, described the gathering as essential for media personnel.

Ms. Brawn emphasized that the EU remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Gambia’s democratic transition, a process rooted in truth, accountability, and reconciliation.

‘’Our partnership with the Gambia Press Union, under the CODE project implemented by International IDEA, is a testament to our shared vision for a peaceful and inclusive Gambia,’’ she pointed out.

Head of Country Office, International IDEA, Mrs. Jainaba Faye, explained that TRRC was established as a pivotal step towards healing the wounds of the past and is part of a larger effort to move the nation from a period of authoritarian rule and human rights abuses under the former regime into a new era characterized by justice, accountability, and reconciliation.

She acknowledged that the TRRC made significant strides toward its goals because the commission held public hearings, where victims and witnesses gave powerful testimonies about the pain they endured.

Mrs. Faye advised journalists to recognize those affected and also understand the potential psychological, emotional, and social consequences that come with being in the spotlight of media coverage.
