Man Remanded at Mile II for ‘Pretending’ to Exercise Witchcraft or Fortune-Telling

Magistrate K.B. Sambou of the Brikama Magistrates’ Courton Tuesday sent one Amadou Saidy to Mile II Central Prisons, pending the narration of the facts of his case by the prosecution.

Amadou was charged with “pretending to exercise witchcraft or tell fortunes”, contrary to section 294 of the Criminal Code,Cap 10:01, Volume 3 of the Laws of The Gambia (2009).

He was also charged with obtaining money through misrepresentation.

The prosecution alleged in count one that Amadou sometime in July of this year in Brikama, by pretense and with intent to defraud, pretended to exercise witchcraft or tell fortunes to Mamadou Alieu Jallow, a representation he knew at the time to be false, thereby committed an offence. 

According to the particulars of the offence in count two, Amadou sometime in July of this year, in Brikama, by false pretense and with intent to defraud, pretended to exercise witchcraft or tell fortunes to Mamadou Alieu Jallow and obtained D320,000.00 from him, a representation he knew at the time to be false, thereby committed an offence.

He pleaded guilty to the charges read him.

At that juncture, the prosecution applied for adjournment for the presentation of facts to the court and the court granted the application and then adjourned the matter 22 January 2024,for facts reading. The accused was meanwhile remanded at Mile II.
