Alleged PIU Shooter Denies Ownership of Pair of Shoes Seized By Investigators

By: Nicholas Bass

The suspect in the shooting of three paramilitary officers Ousainou Bojang has denied owning a pair of shoes that was seized by police investigators in their probe of the shooting incident.

Continuing his testimony before the Banjul High Court, Ousainou said one of the seized shoes belonged to one of his brothers Famara Bojang.

Ousainou was then asked to put on the shoes but his feet could not fit in.

”It’s not my size. The shoes belonged to my brother FamaraBojang,” the suspect told the court.

Justice Jaiteh, presiding said the court has observed that Ousainou’s feet did not fit into the shoes.

Still testifying, the suspect explained that he told prison and police officers at the Anti-Crime HQ in Banjulinding that he did not pull the trigger on the three paramilitaries as alleged. He testified that while at Mile II, one prison warden called Saidy accused him of being untruthful, adding that she also accused him and his family of being UDP loyalists.

When his counsel Lamin J. Darboe asked him if he was part of the protesters who turned out in Banjul for the trial of Brikama Area Council’s Yankuba Darboe, Ousainouresponded in the negative, stating that he had never been part of any demonstration.

Ousainou categorically denied the allegation of being a murderer, arguing that he had told officer L. Sowe to providea video of the shooter if they had one in their possession so that it could be shown to everyone. He further testified that he met seven people at Sukuta police station, who were alleged to have taken part in the shooting, stating that he did not see them at the Banjulinding Anti-Crime HQ.

At that juncture, counsel Darboe applied to the court to issue an order for the Sukuta police station to produce its dairy from 10 September to 30 September 2023.

In granting the defence lawyer’s application, which was not objected to by DPP Yusuf, Justice Jaiteh said: “The station officer of Sukuta, within the Republic of The Gambia, is hereby ordered by this court to produce the station dairy before the next adjourned date.”

The defense lawyer then applied for an adjournment and it was granted.

Meanwhile, according to the particulars of the offense, Ousainou Bojang on or about 12 September 2023, along Sukuta Traffic Light, acaused the death of police constables Pateh Jallow and Sang J. Gomez and seriously injured one Constable Ancy Jawo.
