The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) is gearing up to host the highly anticipated 14th edition of the National Youth Conference and Festival (NAYCONF) from December 16th to 24th, 2024.

This marks the first time KMC will take on this significant event, which is expected to attract over 2,000 young people from across the nation. This year’s theme, “Attaining the Recovery Focus – National Development Plan 2023 – 2027 for and with young people,” underscores the critical role of youth engagement in shaping national development.

During a press conference held on December 13th, 2024, Kemo Bojang, a representative of KMC, expressed enthusiasm about the preparations, stating, “We are glad that we can come this far, and we want to ensure everyone that the Kanifing Municipal Council is committed to bringing all partners on board to see a successful NAYCONF.”

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has been working diligently to ensure that the event is memorable and impactful for all attendees.

Elizabeth Kinta Gomez, a member of the LOC, provided an update on their progress, saying, “We are at the tail end and about to enter the best of NAYCONF.” She highlighted the importance of feedback from past participants, which has been instrumental in refining the event’s logistics and offerings.

Musa Ndow, head of sports for the LOC, assured participants that the sports facilities are ready, with “90% of the trophy” expected to stay with the host, KMC.

Isatou Secka, chairperson of the Kanifing Municipality, discussed the resource mobilization strategies that have been put in place to ensure a successful event, expressing gratitude to key stakeholders for their support.

Hon. Babucarr Mansally, chairman of youth and sports, raised security concerns, emphasizing the necessity for “maximum security” given the diverse nature of the KMC community.

As KMC prepares for its inaugural hosting of NAYCONF, questions arise regarding the lasting impact this event will have on the youth. Will it catalyze increased youth participation in governance and community development? Can it inspire a new generation of leaders and innovators?

The success of NAYCONF 2024 could potentially reshape the landscape for youth initiatives in the region, fostering a stronger sense of community and empowerment among young people. The anticipation surrounding this event reflects the hope that it will not only be a celebration but also a transformative experience for the youth of KMC.
