Journalist Pa Modou Bojang has been awarded the sum of D15,000,000 (fifteen million) in damages by the High Court in Banjul and D200,000 in legal costs following his legal battle against the Inspector General of Police, the Minister of Interior, and the Attorney General.
The case was a result of the abuse he suffered at the hands of Police Intervention Unit (PIU) officers during the Farabaincident in June 2018.
Bojang who is represented by his legal counsel, Lamin J. Darboe, filed a lawsuit in 2018, seeking compensation for assault, battery, physical injuries, mental trauma, unlawful detention, pain, suffering, and public humiliation. He also claimed legal and administrative expenses incurred during the case.
Honourable Justice Sonia Akinbiyi, KJW, in her judgment, ruled in favor of Bojang and granted him D15,000,000 as compensation for the violations and D200,000 to cover legal costs. The ruling highlighted the egregious nature of the abuse inflicted upon him by PIU personnel and officers at the Brikama Police Station during the Faraba incident.
