This past weekend, the vibrant atmosphere at the Africell KMC park was electrified by the echoing cheers of spectators and the thrilling sound of basketballs bouncing off the court in commemoration of world Disability Day, also known as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated every year on December 3. The United Nations created the observance in 1992 to promote further compassion and understanding of people with disabilities of all types. This year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities falls on the same week as the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Africell, the Gambia’s leading telecommunications company, organized an exciting wheelchair basketball competition designed to encourage and inspire positive integration in our community. The event not only showcased the talents of athletes but also highlighted Africell’s commitment to supporting and empowering less privileged members of society.
Under a bright blue sky, teams of dedicated athletes took to the court, demonstrating remarkable skill, tenacity, and camaraderie. The competition attracted participants from various backgrounds, all united by their passion for the sport and a shared goal of breaking down barriers. As the games unfolded, the excitement grew, with each team displaying remarkable teamwork and determination.
The event was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of resilience and an opportunity to challenge societal perceptions surrounding disability. The athletes, all of them wheelchair users, showcased their incredible talent, proving that physical limitations do not define one’s ability to compete at a high level. Each basket scored and every cheer from the crowd served as a reminder of the strength and potential that lies within every individual.
Throughout the day, Africell staff and well-wishers mingled with attendees and participants, expressing their enthusiasm for the event and their dedication to fostering inclusivity within the community. “At Africell, we believe in creating equal opportunities for everyone,” said Musa Sise, Chief Government Relations Officer and PR. “Support for people with disabilities is crucial, and we are committed to promoting initiatives that empower them in all walks of life, including sports.”
The competition also served as a crucial platform for awareness. As attendees watched the games unfold, conversations blossomed about the importance of inclusivity and how sports can play a vital role in bridging gaps between different members of society. Community leaders, activists, and family members gathered to laud the efforts of Africell, recognizing them as a beacon of hope for fostering positive change.
In addition to the competition, Africell offered workshops and demonstrations throughout the day aimed at educating the public about adaptive sports and the capabilities of athletes with disabilities. Attendees learned about the benefits of wheelchair basketball, the work that goes into adaptive sports, and how they could get involved in fostering an inclusive environment for all.
As the sun began to set, the atmosphere shifted from competition to celebration. Prizes were distributed and friend made. it was evident that Africell’s impact reached far beyond the final scores of the day. The event forged connections, built friendships, and ultimately demonstrated the power of sport as a unifying force.
As the community reflected on the day, one sentiment became clear: Together, through initiatives like Africell’s wheelchair basketball competition, we can inspire change and create a more inclusive society for everyone. With continued support and encouragement from organizations and community members alike, the vision of a world where all individuals, regardless of their circumstances, can thrive may soon become a reality.
The event stood as a testament to Africell’s commitment to uplifting the less privileged members of society. Through such initiatives, they are not just delivering telecommunications services; they are also delivering hope, opportunity, and a brighter future for all.
