Gambia Government Pledges Commitment to Tackle Irregular Migration- Dr.Tangara

Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad of The Gambia, has reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing irregular migration and supporting migrant rights.

He made these remarks at the Commemoration of International Migrants Day on December 18, 2024, at the Foreign Ministry Banjul on Wednesday, where he said, “We remain committed to tackling irregular migration, particularly among our youth.”

The day forum, organized in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), brought together migrant representatives, government officials, and stakeholders who made statements on the challenges and opportunities of migration.

 Dr. Tangara emphasized the need for collective action to create safer, more inclusive, and equitable pathways for migration, aligning with the government’s priorities.

“The national coordinating mechanism on migration has served as a vital platform for policy dialogue, coordination, and implementation of migration-related initiatives in the Gambia,” Dr. Tangara pointed out.

  Dr. Tangara acknowledged the significant contributions of migrants to Gambian society, both at home and abroad, emphasizing the importance of empowering youth through education and economic opportunities.

“We continue to develop programs aimed at building the capacity of our institutions and communities to better manage migration and protect the rights of all migrant workers,” Dr.Tangara stated.

The event also saw notable contributions from other speakers, including Miss Rosaline Johnson, a migrant returnee, who underscored the resilience of migrants in contributing to the development of the country.

  Miss Rosaline emphasized, “Migrants should not be seen as failures but as individuals with dreams and potential to contribute positively to society.” 

Mr. Karl Frederick Paul, the UN Resident Coordinator, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing migration challenges.

 “Global partnerships are essential in creating sustainable solutions for migrant issues and promoting a more inclusive society for all individuals” he noted.

Ambassador Lang Yabou, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the government’s efforts in promoting safe and orderly migration while respecting the rights of migrants.

 “The government is dedicated to fostering collaboration on issues affecting migrants and ensuring their safety, dignity, and well-being,” he noted.

 , Paradang Clement, representing the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Gambia office highlighted the importance of partnerships in promoting safe and orderly migration.

 “Collaboration and dialogue are essential in addressing the challenges faced by migrants and ensuring their well-being,” Clement said.

The commemoration of International Migrants Day provided a platform for speakers to advocate for the rights and empowerment of migrants, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all individuals.
