Thousands of Muslims from The Gambia and beyond recently attended the annual Gamo, honouring the father of FoniBesse’s grand marabout the late Sheikh Kanjura Jabi.
Sheikh Momodou Lamin Jabi, widely referred to as Dua Jabi Moro is the current grand marabout of Besse.
The Gamo attracted people from all walks of life, including government officials and prominent Muslim elders from both local and diaspora communities.
During the lifetime of the late Sheikh Kanjura Jabi, the village was recognized, but it gained prominence after his son, Dua Jabi, ascended to leadership. He has thousands of students across the country and beyond.
Sheikh Momodou Lamin Jabi earned the title Dua Jabi due to the effectiveness of his prayers as many, who sought his help,experienced immediate results.
He has gained widespread recognition for his unwavering commitment to spreading Islamic teachings throughout the nation, offering his guidance free of charge.
His efforts have greatly raised the profile of his village, FoniBesse, both nationally and internationally, earning him the nickname “Besse Moro.”
Before his leadership, many were unaware of Foni Besse’s existence. However, through his dedication, Dua Jabi has become synonymous with his village, and many now simply refer to him as Besse.
Caliph General Jabi welcomed the attendees and called for unity in the country, praying to Allah for ease of sustenance for everyone. He noted that his parents lived and passed away in the religion of Islam and urged all to continue worshiping the Almighty while they were in good health. Dua Jabi also offered prayers for the protection of all citizens, including the head of state, who bears the ultimate burden.
Dua Jabi called for the unity of all Muslims and everyone, particularly those in the trade of Marabout, to do good for those who reach out to them. He urged them to be unifiers and to rectify situations even in times of calamity, stating that the pen is mightier than an army when used wisely and that the world can be a better place for everyone. He assured attendees that he will continue to contribute to the spread and teaching of Islam and Marabout work and will help anyone who reaches out to him.
