Ebrima Drammeh, a dedicated migrant situation reporter and advocate, has raised his voice in a desperate plea for support as the death toll of Gambian migrants in the Mediterranean Sea continues to climb.
Frustrated with the lack of action and response from the government, Ebrima is determined to put an end to the heartbreaking loss of lives in the treacherous journey to Europe.
In a heartfelt plea, Drammeh highlighted the deafening silence and lack of response from authorities, stating, “Why does Gambian not care anymore, why nobody is talking, why our television, radio, and media houses are all mute, what’s wrong with our foreign affairs and the government, the politicians, the activists, the musicians, our preacher – everyone is mute.”
His poignant words underscore the urgent need for a coordinated and comprehensive response to prevent further deaths at sea.
With over two hundred Gambian citizens losing their lives and hundreds more missing in just two weeks, Ebrima emphasized the gravity of the situation and the devastating impact on families and communities. He shared the heart-wrenching stories of fathers, mothers, and wives reaching out to him in tears, desperate for answers and support in the wake of their loved ones’ tragic fates.
“I am just a broken guy, I’m weak. I don’t even know what to do or say. Let’s me go and concentrate on my life before I get frustrated because of the things I am seeing and hearing every day about Gambia migrants and sub-Saharan African migrants,” Ebrima expressed, reflecting on the emotional toll of bearing witness to the ongoing loss of lives and the lack of meaningful intervention.
As a tireless advocate for migrant rights and safety, Ebrima’s call to action resonates with a sense of urgency and determination. He urges the government, media, and all stakeholders to prioritize the protection and well-being of migrants, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to prevent further tragedies at sea.
In the face of adversity and heartbreak, Ebrima’s unwavering commitment to advocacy and justice serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for migrant communities in Gambia and across sub-Saharan Africa. His courageous efforts to bring attention to the plight of migrants underscore the critical need for collaborative and proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of those embarking on perilous journeys in search of a better future.
