The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) and Al-Bairak have entered into a pivotal public-private partnership to elevate the efficiency and competitiveness of the Port of Banjul.
The partnership, which was officially signed on the 11th of July 2024, is set to be fully operational as Al-Bairak takes over all operational activities on the 11th of January 2025.
The key stakeholders, including GPA’s Managing Director Ousman Jobarteh, Commissioner of Customs Mr. Alhagie Mbaye, and Al-Bairak’s General Manager, Yunus Yilmaz, have shared their perspectives and insights on this transformational partnership.
During the stakeholder meeting at the Atlantic Hotel on Tuesday, GPA’s Ousman Jobarteh highlighted the necessity of private investment to expand the port’s infrastructure and address financial constraints. He emphasized the importance of the partnership in enhancing efficiency and maintaining competitiveness in the region, stating, “The financial resources required for capacity improvement in Banjul are beyond GPA’s capabilities. This partnership with Al-Bairakwill enable us to remain relevant and competitive in the port industry.”
Commissioner of Customs, Mr. Alhagie Mbaye, spoke about the reforms implemented by GPA and the GRA to enhance port operations, including digital platforms and the single window system. He stressed the importance of optimizing space, strategizing with stakeholders, and embracing digital solutions for increased efficiency, stating, “Efficiency at the port is crucial for optimal revenue collection and national development. We must work together as stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient port operation.”
Al-Bairak’s General Manager, Yunus Yilmaz, expressed confidence in the partnership’s ability to streamline operations and reduce waiting times at the port. He assured stakeholders that the transition would be gradual and beneficial for all parties involved, noting, “Our solutions will benefit all entities in reducing the total cost of the port. This partnership will create a win-win model for all stakeholders.”
As the Port of Banjul embarks on this transformative partnership with Al-Bairak, the public eagerly anticipates the benefits it will bring.
