Gambian leader Adama Barrow has stated that despite other pressing demands, his administration will continue to support the GAF in becoming better equipped, trained, and highly competent as outlined in the country’s Security Sector Reform project.
President Barrow was speaking at the handing-over ceremony of 17 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) that the government of Turkiye donated the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF).
He emphasized the significance of the donation.
“I must note quickly that my government places a high priority on national defense and security, which includes the generation of defense and security resources,” stated Mr. Barrow.
The President said that the donation would significantly enhance GAF’s capabilities to fulfil their constitutional mandate of safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He added that the gesture would enable them to participate effectively in international peacekeeping missions.
“Alongside the on-going Security Sector Reform, the acquisition of the APCs aligns with the broad objectives of the recently formulated National Defense Policy, which emphasizes capacity-building and the necessary equipment to meet the defense and security needs of The Gambia,” he explained.
President Barrow expressed gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the government, and the people of Turkiye for their continuous support to The Gambia. He also expressed gratitude to defense minister Serign Modou Njie.
“No one doubts that Turkiye is a good friend and a strategic partner of The Gambia; thus, Turkish contributions are visible across the broad spectrum of our national development programs. The Gambia’s national budget cannot sustainably cover the high cost of military equipment, yet modern hardware is essential for our armed forces to fulfil their obligations. Therefore, Turkiye’s support is extremely valuable,” the President stated.
He also expressed appreciation for the funds allocated through this framework to finance training and capacity-building programs for Gambia’s military personnel in prominent military institutions in Turkiye.
“I have noted that other military items such as combat boots and night-vision goggles were also procured through the same Cooperation Agreement,” he added.
