Muhammed Bojang, who has been charged with theft, appeared before Magistrate Anna O. Mendy at the BrikamaMagistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Bojang faces a charge of stealing under Section 252 of the Criminal Code, Cap 10:01, Volume 3 of The Gambia’s Revised Laws 2009.

The indictment alleges that on January 14, 2025, in KafutaVillage, Bojang stole a bag of oranges valued at D1,500, the property of Kalifa Touray. Bojang has denied the allegations.

Sgt. 4422 M.L. Sallah, representing the prosecution, announced that the first witness, Kalifa Touray, was present to testify.

Touray, a farmer from Kafuta Village, explained in court that he owns two orchards, where two of his sons stay overnight to guard the crops. One day, Touray’s son, Lamin Touray, informed him that someone had stolen oranges from their orchard.

“My son, Lamin, told me that someone had been caught with a bag of oranges by NIA officers Bojang and Ansu Touray, who took the suspect to the Faraba Checkpoint. We went to the checkpoint, and I saw the bag of oranges. I asked Muhammed (the accused), a grown man like you, stealing oranges? He claimed he had gotten the oranges from his home. I told him it was not true because his father does not grow this type of orange,” Touray explained in court.

The prosecution requested an adjournment to call a second witness, PW2, to testify and did not object to the accused’s bail.

The court granted Bojang bail in the sum of D50,000, with one Gambian surety required to provide a valid Gambian ID card or passport and an affidavit of means.

The case was adjourned to January 17, 2025, for the hearing of PW2’s testimony.
