The Shalom Movement has spread its tentacles to The Gambia to support interventions geared towards improving the socio-economic wellbeing of Gambians in a sustainable manner.
The Shalom Movement-Gambia Chapter was recently launched in the Western Gambian village of Sukuta.
This new movement, launched at Basabato Ward, will focus on development initiatives that will be tailored to promote, strengthen and advocate for global peace, women and youth empowerment, child protection, health, sports, agriculture and arts and culture.
Speaking at the launch, Barbara, one of the brains behind the initiative expressed appreciation and delight for being part of this process, emphasizing that the movement can play a crucial role in the country’s development efforts.
She highlighted some of the key priorities of the movement in the education sector among others.
Sarjo Touray, focal person of Shalom Movement-Gambia Chapter also underlined the significance of the launch.
Meanwhile, cash was donated to the women of the community for enthusiastically lending moral support to the initiative during its launch.
Speaking on behalf of the women of Sukuta, Ramatoulie Jallow called on the movement to empower women by providing them with the necessary support.
She pointed out that Sukuta community is still facing challenges in the sectors of education, health, among others.
“We are seeking support from the movement, especially women gardeners, as accessing water in our gardens is another challenge. We also need schools in this area. Our children find it hard to go to school,” she highlighted.
“Health issues are also a part of the challenges we are facing because the health centers are far and sometimes, you will take a patient to the health center but medications would not be available,” she added.
The movement’s activities will focus on complementing the efforts of the government by creating a secure environment for the Gambian populace through the provision of skills training in prisons and for youths and women.
This Shalom Movement was brought to The Gambia thanks to the instrumentality of Italian-based Gambian Sarjo Touray and his Italian partners in line with their mission to provide assistance to African countries.
