“Legislative Advances in The Gambia Ensure Child Protection and Inclusive Education” Says Gender Minister

The Minister of gender, children and social welfare Hon Fatou Sanyang Kinteh recently highlighted important legislative developments focused on enhancing child protection and promoting inclusive education in The Gambia.

In a significant effort to safeguard children’s rights, Minister Kinteh emphasized the government’s commitment to aligning national laws with international standards. She mentioned that recent amendments to the Children’s Act of 2005 now criminalize harmful practices such as child marriage, showing a serious dedication to protecting children’s welfare.

The Minister stated, “Our government is dedicated to strengthening our laws to meet international standards,” which highlights the importance of these changes in combating threats to children’s safety.

Additionally, the updated Women’s Act explicitly bans Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which the Minister explained is part of the government’s commitment to fighting gender-based violence. She also pointed out the establishment of specialized units, including the Directorate of Children’s Affairs and the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare, as evidence of The Gambia’s proactive approach to advancing child protection policies.

Furthermore, the Minister stressed the significance of inclusive education, indicating that the government is actively working to ensure that children with disabilities receive quality education and support. This initiative aims to eliminate barriers to education and foster equality within the educational system.

Minister Kinteh reaffirmed, “Our unwavering commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and promoting inclusive education is a top priority.” The ongoing legislative advancements and institutional support reflect a comprehensive approach to child welfare, paving the way for a brighter future for all children in the nation.
