PRESS RELEASE -BANK ROBERY AT ACCESS BANK BRUSUBI BRANCH

The Gambia Bankers Association strongly condemns the armed robbery that took place at the Access Bank BrusubiBranch on Wednesday, 22nd January 2025, at approximately 1:00 PM local time. This violent act, perpetrated by ruthless criminals, could have resulted in tragic outcomes for both bank staff and customers. Fortunately, the situation was handled in line with established protocols, preventing further harm. Such brazen acts of violence are becoming increasingly common in our society, and if not addressed, they pose a significant threat to public safety and the stability of our financial system. The police continue to actively investigating the incident.

The banking sector is a cornerstone of economic growth, providing essential services such as business financing, credit facilities, cash management, and a secure environment for financial transactions. The Gambian banking industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming numerous challenges and establishing itself as a regional model for foreign investment. This success is a testament to the collective efforts of regulators, customers, bank staff, and other stakeholders. Moreover, banks are entrusted with safeguarding billions of dalasi in customer funds, which must be diligently protected.

We call on all citizens to unite in preserving the peace and stability that make The Gambia an attractive destination for investment and economic development. The banking sector is committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to combat these criminal activities. We are also collaborating closely with authorities to tackle the rising trend of crime in the country.
