Lower Nuimi Chief Calls for Protection of Nuimi National Park

By: Haruna Kuyateh

The Chief of Lower Nuimi, George L. Sonko, has called for the protection of the Niumi national park from illegal activities. He emphasized the importance of preserving the forest cover and highlighted the Niumi district tribunal’s zero-tolerance posture against illegal activity in the national park.

Chief Sonko was speaking in an interview with The Voice in Essau.

He described the recent illegal logging in Lower Nuimi as a cause for concern and called on Alkalolu to desist from grabbing and selling land within the forest for residential or agricultural purposes.

The Lower Nuimi chief vowed that his office will not compromise on illegal activities in the park, saying such would affect biodiversity and ecological development.
He expressed the tribunal’s commitment to the welfare of livestock, noting that encroachment on cattle tracks and bushfires are unacceptable and called on communities to jealously guide the fauna and flora.
