Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, has defended President Adama Barrow’s recent declaration to run for a third term , stating that the President has the right to seek re-election.

Dr. Ceesay contended that only a few people in the country have been advocating against the President’s intention not to leave the stage, adding that the majority of Gambians are with the President as regards his decision, stating that anyone who goes against the President’s declaration will be in violation of the laws of the land.

“Everyone has a right to express their opinion about issues of the country, but millions of Gambians are not talking about that. They [Gambians] are saying that the law permits President Barrow to contest election if he wishes and anybody, who wants to stop that is going against the law, and that can be termed as insurrection. We cannot accept a country where there is lawlessness. The President has a right to contest because no law stops him, and nobody can stop that,” Dr. Ceesay emphasized on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez on Tuesday.

He stated that people are free to sound their opinions but if anyone wants to stop the President from running for a third term must wait until 2026 and use their votes to vote for whosoever they wish, maintaining that it’s the best they can do under the circumstance, reiterating that those against the President’s declaration cannot stop him from throwing his hat into the ring come 2026 general election.
