 German Ambassador Symbolically Hands Over €210,000 Worth of Equipment to Gambian Police Force

The German Police Support Team (GPST) project in The Gambia has concluded with a successful handover and closing ceremony at the Police Intervention Unit Headquarters in Kanifing.

The handover signified the culmination of a transformative partnership that has significantly enhanced police reform and capacity building within the Gambia Police Force.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Ebrima Bah stated that the project’s impact on democratic policing has been instrumental in strengthening institutional capacity and training officers to uphold the highest standards of law enforcement.

Mr. Sebastian Eisenhardt, head of project GPST, commended the collaborative efforts that led to key milestones, adding through training programs, logistical support, and infrastructure upgrades.

“We have worked together to modernize the GPF and equip officers with the necessary skills for effective policing,” he noted.

Inspector General of Police, Seedy Mukhtar Touray, expressed gratitude to the project partners, saying, “We are thankful for the unwavering support from the German Government, the European Union, and the GPST trainers. Their contribution has been invaluable in shaping the future of policing in The Gambia.”

German Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Klaus Botzet, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to security sector reforms. He stated the cooperation between the two nations in achieving common goals has been exemplary. “We are proud to have been part of this transformative journey.”

Representing the Ministry of Interior, Permanent Secretary Assan Tangara commended the GPST initiative for its positive impact on police operations.

He stated, “The GPST project has played a significant role in improving law enforcement practices and ensuring safer communities for all residents.”

“The symbolic handover of €210,000 worth of equipment and items, including two vehicles, was met with appreciation by the IGP and highlighted the ongoing commitment to security development in The Gambia,” he added.

As the GPST project comes to a close, one can only hope that the materials and training provided will be effectively utilized by the Gambia Police Force to continue improving policing standards and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. The ceremony marked not just the end of a project but also the beginning of a new chapter for law enforcement in The Gambia.
