TIKA Rehabilitation Project Valued Over One Million at Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Ward

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has completed a project at the Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Ward, worth one million, aimed at enhancing the facility and services for mental health patients.

The project included various upgrades and additions to improve the environment and support provided at the psychiatric ward.

The project, valued at USD 16,000 approximately GMD 1.136, 000, encompassed a range of improvements such as the replacement of the roof and ceiling, painting of internal and external walls, the establishment of a vegetable garden, and the creation of a football field for sports activities.

Additionally, tools and equipment were provided for hobby areas including tailoring, batik making, arts, and board games, all aimed at promoting engagement and well-being among patients at the facility.

During the handover ceremony on Thursday, 6th February 2025, at the Tanka Tanka premises, various dignitaries expressed their gratitude for the successful completion of the project.

The Turkish Ambassador to the Gambia Mr Turter OBA commended the efforts, stating, “I am very pleased to witness this vital project come to fruition, demonstrating our commitment to mental health care.”

He emphasized the importance of mental health and rehabilitation, highlighting the commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance the overall well-being and care of individuals facing mental health challenges.

Mr. Lamin Dibba, Program Officer of the Association for the Mentally Disabled Gambia, acknowledged the significance of the project in improving mental health services in the country.

He expressed his appreciation to all involved and noted the positive impact the refurbishment of the occupational therapy unit would have on patient rehabilitation and integration into society.

Bakary Camara, Metro Tanka Tanka, reflected on the journey leading to the project, stating, “In recognizing the significance of occupational therapy (OT) as a vital component of the rehab center, I emphasize the avoidance of solely relying on psych medications to prevent adverse physical effects for patients.

This approach aims to mitigate the risks of medical complications like liver issues and metabolism disorders.”

Ms. Mam Jarra Marega, Program Manager for the National Mental Health Program, emphasized the critical role of occupational therapy in mental health service delivery. She underscored the importance of empowering individuals through such programs, facilitating the development of social and vocational skills for patients undergoing treatment at the psychiatric ward.

Mrs Sule Bayor, TIKA Banjul Coordinator, thanked all participants for their support and highlighted the agency’s commitment to contributing to mental health care in the Gambia.

She noted that the positive outcomes expected from the project, aim to reduce symptoms and behavioral disorders while facilitating the integration of patients into society through enhanced services and facilities.
