IGP Commits to Protecting Female Officers from Sexual Harassment

The Inspector General of Police, Seedy Mukhtarr Touray, has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting female officers from sexual harassment, a pledge that was prominently featured during the Gender Promotion Initiative (GPI) Celebration Ceremony held on Thursday, February 6.

His resolute statement underscored the Gambia Police Force’s dedication to establishing a safe and supportive work environment for all personnel.

IGP Seedy Mukhtarr Touray emphasized the necessity of providing female colleagues with opportunities for advancement, which include targeted promotions, specialized training, and sustained career development initiatives. He reiterated the force’s commitment to gender mainstreaming as articulated in the National Policing Strategy and Policing Doctrine, signifying a progressive advancement toward gender inclusivity within the Gambia Police Force.

The IGP announced the promotion of 15 participants from the program to higher ranks, with an additional five scheduled for future promotion. This initiative highlights the positive outcomes of the program aimed at empowering female officers within the force. Furthermore, his strong denunciation of sexual harassment sent a clear message that such misconduct would not be tolerated, thereby reinforcing the Gambia Police Force’s commitment to creating a safe and respectful work environment.

Following IGP Seedy Mukhtarr Touray’s assertive declaration, the Deputy Head of Mission for the European Union commended the Gambia Police Force’s proactive measures to enhance gender equality and inclusivity. The collaboration with DCAF in supporting initiatives like the GPI was acknowledged as vital for advancing the professional growth and leadership capabilities of female officers within the Gambia Police Force.

ASP Gas Shabally provided a testimonial expressing gratitude for the transformative training received, stating, “This training equips us with everything we need—self-confidence, competence, and leadership skills.” Her remarks reflect the IGP’s commitment to equipping female officers with the necessary tools and opportunities for advancement within the Gambia Police Force.

The Gender Promotion Initiative Celebration Ceremony exemplified the collaborative efforts of the Gambia Police Force, DCAF, and the European Union in promoting gender equality, empowering female officers, and ensuring a workplace devoid of sexual harassment. The event highlighted the dedication of the GPF, DCAF, and the European Union to foster gender inclusion and leadership development within the force, thereby serving as a positive model for future initiatives and empowerment programs.
