The Ministry of Information, Media, and Broadcasting with support from WAVE Gambia recently sensitized communities on Countering Misinformation and Disinformation. The synergy was held at the Governor’s Office, Kerewan in the North Bank Region.
Lamin Saidykhan Governor of the North Bank Region noted the importance of the sensitization saying failure to act can contribute to dividing society and jeopardize peace and security.
He said the forum would help to empower and inform the gathering on the dangers of sharing misinformation and disinformation while the sensitization will help avert its negative effects on peace-building and security.
The Governor thanked the government through the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting, and WAVE Gambia for the campaign while calling on the people to be vigilant and steadfast.
Muhamed S Bah, a Communication Specialist said misinformation and disinformation can contribute to instability in society, so it is important to create public awareness and be mindful of the type of messages or information to disseminate.
He said the outreach would contribute to empowering people to verify information, and sources together with the use of social media platforms.
Tijan Janneh of GRTS said information is power and the engagement is to create space to talk about misinformation and disinformation. He urged everyone to be mindful of the types of information they disseminate and ensure proper censorship of information about sharing and talking about the subject matter.
Bakary Fatty, Alkalo of Kerewan thanked the Ministry for the foresight, noting that misinformation and disinformation continue to create more problems in society.
He quickly assured them of their support while challenging authorities to intensify the campaign on countering misinformation and disinformation.
Ebrima Sankareh, the government spokesperson said the partnership is vital and advised parents, and the council of elders to support the campaign.
He said the government is committed to bringing government closer to the people, citing Mansa Kunda Bantaba, Press Briefing while Access To Information (ATI) law and data protection is before the National Assembly.
Alagie Fofana of Dasilami, Lamin Suwareh of Badibou Suwareh Kunda, Bakary Kumba Fofana Badgie of Jokadou District Tribunal, Katim Touray of Paradise FM Farafenni and others made remarkable contributions during the forum.
