Thieves Arraigned in Court

Ali Touray, an alleged thief was Tuesday arraigned before Magistrate B Sowe of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court for stealing 2 Mobile Phones.

Appearing on behalf of the Inspector General of Police for the matter, Sergeant Amadou Baldeh, stated that Ali is charged with stealing from a person Contrary to Section 256 (a) of the Criminal Code Cap 10.01 Volume 3 Revised Laws of The Gambia 2009.

The particulars of offense alleged that Ali Touray on or about the 5th day of February 2025, at New Jeshwang in the Kanifing Municipal Council in the Republic of The Gambia, fraudulently and without any claim and or right, stole one Android Smart Phone mark Spark 10 valued at D9,500.00

And one Simple Phone mark Techno valued at D800.00 being the properties of one Sanu Bojang thereby committed an offence against the Law.

Ali who was not represented by any legal counsel denied any wrongdoing.

Prosecutor Baldeh at this juncture, though not objecting to bail for the accused, applied for an adjournment to enable him secure witnesses before the next adjourned date.

Trial Magistrate Sowe, granted bail to the accused person in the sum of D80,000.00 with two Gambian sureties who shall deposit their valid national identity card or passport and swear to an affidavit of means.  Magistrate Sowe adjourned the matter to Wednesday the 26th February 2025 for continuation.

In a related story, the duo of Omar Kànteh and Abdoulie Jallow were also yesterday arraigned before Magistrate M. Faal of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court for stealing motor vehicle Gear Box.

Jatta and B. Jarra announced their appearance for Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the matter, while the duo of Omar and Abdoulie were not represented by counsel.

The prosecutors charged the duo with two counts, firstly conspiracy to commit felony contrary to section (368) of the Criminal Code Cap 10. 01 Volume 3 Revised Laws of The Gambia 2009, and Stealing contrary to section (252) of the Criminal Code Cap 10.01 Volume 3 Revised Laws of The Gambia 2009.

According to the particulars of their offense, count one stated that Omar Kànteh and Abdoulie Jallow on or about the 25th day of January,2025, at Kanifing South in the Kanifing Municipal Council, conspired among themselves to commit a felony therein stealing. Count two charged them with Stealing a vehicle gear box valued at D90,000 being the property of one Muhammad Barry

Omar and Abdoulie both pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them, adding that they didn’t steal the gear box, but that they bought it.

The prosecutors sought for an adjournment to enable them secure witnesses before the next adjourned date and didn’t object to bail for the accused persons.

Magistrate M Faal granted bail for the accused persons in the sum of D100,000.00 each with one Gambian surety who shall deposit their valid national identity card or passport and swear to affidavit of means. The matter was adjourned to Monday 10th March, 2025 for continuation.
