By Haddy Touray

The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has announced the suspension of clinical services in Fajara and Keneba, effective Thursday, 13 February 2025. This decision comes after the MRCG Workers’ Union initiated a sit-down strike on 11 February 2025.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Prof. Umberto D’Alessandro, Unit Director, stated, “We recognize our employees’ right to voice their opinions and have always encouraged dialogue. While we are working with relevant stakeholders to find an amicable solution, we regret to inform the public that clinical services in Fajara and Keneba will be suspended starting Thursday, 13 February 2025.”

The statement further outlined that a limited outpatient service will be available on Monday, 17 February 2025, in both Fajara and Keneba. “The first 200 patients who arrive at the clinic in Fajara before 8 a.m. with pre-scheduled appointments for 13-21 February will be seen. Please note that the ward will remain closed, and we recommend that patients seeking urgent care go to their nearest hospital or health center.”

MRCG assured the public that it fully understands the impact of this suspension on the Gambian population and will keep the public informed regarding the resumption of services. Participants in ongoing MRCG clinical studies requiring medical care during this period are advised to contact their study staff to arrange alternative care.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause to our stakeholders and the communities we serve. Thank you for your understanding during this time,” the statement concluded.
