Alieu Kebbeh, a convicted shop burglar, was remanded at Mile II Central Prison yesterday, awaiting sentencing from Magistrate B. Sowe of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

ASP Amat Touray, representing the Inspector General of Police, informed the court that Alieu is charged with “shop breaking,” in violation of Section 281 of the Criminal Code, Cap 10.01, Volume 3, Revised Laws of The Gambia 2009.

The details of the offense are as follows: On February 9, 2025, at Bakau in the Kanifing Municipal Council, Alieu Kebbeh forcibly broke into the shop of Alhagie Babou Touray with the intent to commit a felony.

Alieu did not contest the allegations against him. Prosecutor Amat Touray presented the facts, stating that the crime occurred around 2 a.m. on February 9, when Alieu entered the shop by breaking through the roof, damaging an iron sheet in the process. During his attempt to flee, he was chased and apprehended by members of the community, along with the complainant. Upon his arrival at the police station, Alieu confessed to his crime and was subsequently charged.

Magistrate B. Sowe ordered that Alieu Kebbeh be remanded at Mile II Central Prison pending sentencing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
