Hon. Seedy SK Njie, Deputy Speaker, has confidently led a high-level Gambian delegation to the ongoing Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)-United Nations (UN) Hearings in New York.
This year’s theme, “Scaling Up Action for the Sustainable Development Goals: Finance, Institutions, and Politics,” underscores the critical discussions among parliamentarians, policymakers, and international experts, all aimed at accelerating progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Hon. Njie, in his statement, actively advocated for mobilizing financial resources, strengthening institutions, and enhancing political commitment to effectively achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He called the urgent need for enhanced efforts; The Gambia is firmly insisting on innovative financing mechanisms, improved governance structures, and robust global partnerships to drive sustainable development at both national and international levels.
He emphasized the Gambia’s unwavering commitment to implementing the SDGs.
He highlighted ongoing national initiatives focused on poverty eradication, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth.
“For The Gambia, achieving the SDGs is not merely an aspiration; it is an imperative. We are diligently implementing policies that align with our national development priorities while ensuring no one is left behind,” declared Hon. Seedy SK Njie.
“A significant focus of the hearings is the pressing challenge of financing the SDGs, especially for developing countries. The Gambian representatives are vocally advocating for increased international cooperation, debt relief measures, and innovative funding solutions to close the financial gaps that impede SDG progress, he added.
The hearings also provided a pivotal opportunity for the delegation to assertively share The Gambia’s experiences and challenges related to SDG implementation, particularly regarding climate action, gender equality, and youth empowerment. The delegation reinforced the necessity of inclusive and accountable governance as fundamental to achieving sustainable development.
“The IPU-UN Hearings serve as a vital platform for fostering dialogue between legislators and the UN system, ensuring that parliamentary perspectives are robustly integrated into global SDG strategies. The Gambian delegation is resolute in leveraging this engagement to enhance national policies and drive collective action towards a more sustainable future,” emphasized Seedy Njie.
He stressed that the Gambia’s active participation will significantly strengthen international collaboration and solidify the country’s position as a leading advocate for sustainable development on the global stage.
