The Young Mathematician Association of The Gambia (YMA) successfully hosted its Annual Maths Quiz Competition yesterday at the University of The Gambia’s Law Faculty Auditorium in Kanifing.
Dr. Ebrima Bittaye, Secretary General of the China/Gambia Alumni Students’ Association and founder of the Young Mathematician Association, delivered powerful welcoming remarks that highlighted the association’s establishment in 2015.
He made it clear that their vision is to harness the power of mathematics to unlock the tremendous potential of young minds across The Gambia.
He iterated that the competition represented a fierce academic challenge among thirty-four secondary schools from regions 1 and 2, enabling students to showcase their exceptional talents and deep understanding of mathematics. This event also serves as a tribute to the late Pa Malick Sallah, who was a Senior Mathematics Lecturer at The Gambia College School of Education, he informed the audience.
He emphasized that the quiz competition is not merely a celebration of mathematical prowess; it is a clear testament to the transformative power of education and the collaborative spirit of teamwork.
He commended China’s partnership with The Gambia in education, infrastructural development, and capacity-building initiatives, stating that China has played an indispensable role in the nation’s growth, creating bridges—both literal and metaphorical—that are essential for a more interconnected and prosperous future.
Dr. Bubacarr Bah, Head of Data Science at the MRC in The Gambia, firmly underscored the critical importance of mathematics in education and society.
He stated that mathematics transcends simple calculations; it develops essential critical thinking skills and empowers students to analyze complex problems effectively.
Lamin Singhateh, a representative from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, made it abundantly clear that the Ministry is committed to ensuring the presence of high-quality mathematics teachers in schools.
He expressed confidence that the quiz competition would serve as an inspiration for young minds regarding the vital role mathematics plays in technology and national empowerment.
Miss Mariatou Sallah, granddaughter of the late Pa Malick Sallah, confidently shared the impactful legacy of her grandfather while describing him as an exceptional asset to the family and the nation, contributing significantly to the educational sector at The Gambia College.
According to her, Mr. Sallah played a crucial role in nurturing several key public figures in the country, including Isatou Njie Saidy, former Vice President of The Republic of The Gambia, Dr. Bubacarr Bah, and Dr. Ebrima Bittaye.
