Voters in Masembeh Ward will elect a new ward councillor on Saturday in a bye-election.
The by-election was triggered by the death of former Masembeh Ward councillor Bakary Korita late last year.
Heavyweights of the ruling NPP and the main opposition party UDP have travelled to Masembeh to canvass votes for their respective party candidates.
Deputy House speaker and top NPP official Seedy Njie, NPP’s campaign manager Lamin Cham, information minister Dr. Ismaila Ceesay and presidential adviser Momodou Sabally were all on the campaign trail at the time of writing this story.
UDP bigwigs such as Talib Ahmed Bensouda, Yankuba Darboe and Rohey Malick Lowe were also seen on the campaign trail.
Bakary S. Jarju of the UDP and his half-brother Lamin Jarju of the NPP are vying for the Masembeh seat.
During the campaign, Bakary S. Jarju expressed confidence in retaining the Masembeh Ward and promised to deliver development to his people, saying: “I know here is a UDP stronghold but come out en mass and vote for me and then go back home and wait for the declaration of our victory. My intention is to bring limitless development to this ward if elected.”
Meanwhile, NPP’s Lamin Jarju called on voters to vote for the NPP for development, stating that the opposition lacks the means to develop the Masembeh Ward.
“The opposition can’t bring you any development. Vote for me as a representative of the NPP to benefit from various development projects in the future.” AS region.
