President Adama Barrow on Monday officially inaugurated the new building of Star FM/TV located along Bertil Harding Highway in Kanifing East.

President Barrow declared that this inauguration represents a significant achievement, signalling undeniable growth, progress, and a substantial investment in the Gambian media landscape.

“This multi-million dalasi project is not merely about unveiling a new structure; it is a powerful affirmation of the ongoing transformation within The Gambia’s media sector,” the President said in his inaugural speech.

“This milestone reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to freedom of expression, democracy, and national development—values that will be staunchly upheld and championed,” he added.

The Gambian leader said since taking office in 2017, his administration has prioritized the establishment of an open and thriving media environment, exemplified by the enactment of the Access to Information Act, which demonstrates a clear commitment to media freedom, transparency, and sound governance.

“A strong and independent media sector is an essential pillar of democracy. We will continue to vigorously support initiatives that empower the press to operate freely, fairly, and effectively. The media’s role in nation-building is crucial. Media outlets inform, educate, and entertain, possessing the unique power to unite our nation while driving accountability and civic engagement,” President Barrow emphasized.

He urged the management and staff of Star FM/TV to relentlessly pursue excellence, uphold ethical journalism, and seize new technologies to reach broader audiences and enhance their services continuously.

“Our government remains fully committed to peace, stability, and sustainable development. The media is vital in ensuring information is disseminated accurately and responsibly, thereby fostering an enlightened and unified nation,” he reaffirmed.

Alpha Karaga, the Chief Executive Officer of Star FM/TV, articulated that the inauguration of the new facility marks a decisive milestone in the station’s “13 years of excellence in broadcasting”.

He emphasized that the inauguration was not just a celebration but a testament to growth, resilience, and the pursuit of education.

“Star FM/TV unequivocally aims to educate, entertain, and inform the public, reinforcing their role as a trusted media house in The Gambia,” stated CEO Karaga.

He reiterated their commitment to delivering high-quality content that educates the public, establishing a standard of trust and progress for the media community.

Mr. Karaga underscored the media’s critical role in producing and presenting news, particularly during elections, and pointed out that the new building boasts a studio, conference hall, TV control room, and more.

He expressed deep appreciation to all partners, who contributed to transforming Star TV into a respected institution.

Mrs. Meita Touray, representing the President of The Gambia Press Union, stated that the event exemplifies the unwavering dedication of media practitioners in The Gambia, who steadfastly uphold journalistic values by informing, educating, and fostering constructive dialogue on pressing national issues.

She emphasized that the gathering was anchored on a powerful theme: “Ethical and Professional Media—A Tool for Peace and Tranquilty in a Nation.” This theme, she acknowledged, reinforces journalism’s critical role in shaping public opinion, promoting national cohesion, and ensuring democratic progress, while highlighting the media’s crucial responsibility in maintaining peace, facilitating development, and holding duty bearers accountable to the public.

“As we celebrate the expansion of Star FM/TV, we also seize the opportunity to widen the doors for young and aspiring journalists,” Mrs. Touray declared.

She urged Star FM/TV to invest in emerging talents, provide mentorship, and create a platform that enables budding journalists to refine their skills and contribute meaningfully to the national discourse, asserting that the future of the media industry hinges on strategic investments in capacity-building, professional development, and ethical training.
