150,000 Jobs by 2028: President Barrow’s Bold Promise to Gambian Youth

President Adama Barrow has reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to youth employment, setting an ambitious target of creating 150,000 jobs by 2028.

Speaking at the official launch of the EU Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) for Tourism and Creative Industries on Tuesday 25 February, the President emphasized that his administration is not just making promises but delivering tangible opportunities for young Gambians. “As part of our broader development agenda, my government stands firm in its commitment to job creation, economic growth, and human capital development,” President Barrow declared. “We have set an ambitious goal of creating 150,000 jobs by 2028, ensuring that our economic policies contribute more significantly to national prosperity.”

The President made it clear that tourism and the creative industries will play a central role in achieving this goal, highlighting their potential to drive economic diversification and sustainable development. He urged all stakeholders to ensure that initiatives like YEP go beyond just activities and interventions but instead deliver real, life-changing impacts.

“I strongly challenge the ITC project team and stakeholders to make sure this project delivers tangible impact nationwide. It must go beyond just activities and interventions. Let it transform lives, empower businesses, and strengthen our national economy,” he stated.

Mrs. Cordu L. Jabang, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, underscored the project’s significance in addressing youth unemployment. “This initiative is a critical step in ensuring that young Gambians have access to sustainable job opportunities and the skills needed to thrive,” she said.

Ms. Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC), echoed these sentiments, stating that the project represents a new era for tourism and creative industries in The Gambia. “We are investing in young people not just for today, but for the long-term growth of the economy,” she noted.

EU Ambassador Immaculada Roca i Cortés reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting youth empowerment in The Gambia, calling the project a testament to strong partnerships driving meaningful change. Entrepreneur Ida Cham Njai also shared her experience, stressing the need for mentorship and access to capital for young businesses.

With the launch of the YEP, The Gambia is set to pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future, harnessing the creativity and innovation of its youth to drive the country’s economic pro.
