Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, has reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to strengthening nuclear security, expediting the review of pending treaties, and establishing a strong legislative framework to support global disarmament.

Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Defence and Security Committee, Hon. Njie, and his delegations are attending the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna.

“The IAEA’s mission to safeguard the world from the dangers of nuclear weapons cannot be overstated. We recognize the importance of our engagement and the role we can play as a trusted partner to the agency,” Hon. Njie said.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the importance of engaging with legislators, highlighting their critical role in shaping nuclear security policies.

He noted that while The Gambia has not yet benefited from IAEA technical support, the agency is ready to assist in its development efforts.

“This marks the beginning of a more direct and active collaboration with The Gambia. We are committed to ensuring that cooperation is strengthened to enhance development efforts,” Grossi affirmed.

The meeting ended with a pledge to deepen cooperation, with the IAEA committing to provide technical support, training, and resources to assist The Gambia in its legislative and developmental processes. Both parties expressed optimism about the future of their partnership.
