Bakary Badjie, the National Assembly Member for Foni Bintang Karanai, has welcomed his expulsion from the splinter APRC by former President Yaya Jammeh, describing the development as a significant opportunity for growth and progress.
Last week, Badjie announced his desire to contest the 2026 presidential elections, a move that triggered a debate among his fellow Foni NAMs and some citizens, who claimed that it was premature for him to declare his presidential ambition.
In response to Jammeh’s audio statement released on Monday, NAM Badjie expressed gratitude for the expulsion, recognizing it as a chance to stand firm in his convictions.
“I am dedicated to a cause I will never abandon. The Gambian people deserve far better than what they’ve been given,” he asserted.
Badjie emphasized that the time have come for young people to take full charge of their destiny and to choose the leadership they desire.
“The driving force behind my decision to run for President is my relentless advocacy for the improved living conditions of our citizens within the National Assembly. My efforts have been stifled by my position in the minority caucus, where success often hinges on numbers,” he pointed out.
Reacting to claims in some quarters that he is too young to run for President, Badjie countered, “I am not too young to recognize the grave suffering faced by our people, especially those risking their lives at the Mediterranean Sea. I am mature enough to comprehend the hardships that have plagued our citizens for years, from irregular migration to water shortages, power outages, inadequate healthcare, and a faltering economy.” He continued: “I am resolute in my fight against corruption, which is a cornerstone of my agenda. This rampant corruption must be tackled head-on and without hesitation.”
Badjie stated that the people of Foni Bintang have expressed support for his decision to contest in the next general election.
“The Gambia demands better governance. Relying solely on political parties will not alleviate our suffering. Citizens need to be vigilant during elections and ensure they vote for candidates, who exemplify honesty, commitment, and integrity,” he urged.
Addressing his critics, he declared, “I anticipated this backlash because, in life, there will always be those who question your actions. It is up to me to rise above the criticisms and continue pushing for change.”
